Lou Mora Interview

Lou Mora is a photographer based in California specializes in portraits and lifestyle for advertising, editorial and stock. He replies to Creative And Live in spite of his busy schedule, thank you Lou.

1. It appears to me that the bokeh you used in your last set contributes to bringing out the personality as well as the identity of each person, did you make it on purpose?

Yes, I did do this on purpose. By using different materials I was able to create shapes both behind and in front of the subject in order to portray a feeling to the viewer of the image.

2. One can feel the instant as well as the particular exchange you have with the person you take a picture of, but do you grant any importance to the production?

Production in the sense of clothing and makeup, yes it is important but only to enhance what they already have. I don’t do much retouching when it comes to my photography. I try to keep things as real as possible. The clothing is always their own and the makeup is only to cover blemishes and smooth out the skin tones.

3. You say having discovered your passion for photography while in Sweden, what were the elements that made this passion bloom?

I moved to Sweden in my early 20’s and decided to buy a camera to document my stay there. The home where I lived had a darkroom in the basement which hadn’t been used in sometime. I took it as an opportunity to learn more about photography. After researching how to process film, it only took one attempt at printing for me to fall in love with photography. And it was at that moment that I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

4. Further on, will you keep on working on portraits or do you have any other project?

I love shooting portraits and you never know where things will take you but I am open to it all.

At this time, he hasn’t any shows scheduled but his work is available on his very great website.
