Stephen Walter

Stephen Walter is a photographer and illustrator living between London and Berlin. His work explores symbols, signs and words revealing human city life. He created amazing compositions like his topographical map of London. In this piece everything is shown: parks, streets, monuments but also places he liked, hated, random facts and personal moments… It’s an entire autobiographical piece, a celebration of London.

I think it’s a certain time in human history were so much is already figured out and mapped. 10 years ago I was making a lot of observational drawings and photos of landscape and taking them into a process of experimental map making. I tended to always work over these compositions to produce these signs and symbols, often abstract. And so I decided to build images and that led me on building maps of these signs and symbols.

Stephen Walter will take part in the exhibition Magnificent Maps: Power, Propaganda and Art at The British Library from 30 April to 19 September 2010.
